How much homes actually use, by region
Average annual electricity used by a dehumidifier in homes that have one, from the EIA's 2020 Residential Energy Consumption Survey (RECS), and what that use costs at today's U.S. average rate.
| Region | kWh per year | Cost per year |
|---|---|---|
| United States | 999 | $181.42 |
| New England | 757 | $137.47 |
| Middle Atlantic | 993 | $180.33 |
| East North Central | 1,023 | $185.78 |
| West North Central | 814 | $147.82 |
| South Atlantic | 1,211 | $219.92 |
| East South Central | 1,132 | $205.57 |
| West South Central | 1,238 | $224.82 |
| Mountain North | 999 | $181.42 |
| Mountain South | 1,001 | $181.78 |
| Pacific | 806 | $146.37 |
How the cost is calculated
The Department of Energy's formula: watts × hours per day ÷ 1,000 = kWh per day. Multiply by the days you use it and by your rate in dollars per kWh. A 1,500 W device running 1 hour uses 1.5 kWh; at 18¢ that is 27¢.
How to lower the cost
- Set humidity to about 50% rather than the lowest setting.
- Keep doors and windows closed in the room being dried.
- ENERGY STAR models remove more water per kWh.
