How the cost is calculated
Appliances that run around the clock cycle on and off, so their wattage alone overstates their use. The EnergyGuide label's kWh per year already accounts for that: divide it by 12 and multiply by your rate to get the monthly cost.
How to lower the cost
- Set the thermostat to 120 °F.
- Fix dripping hot-water taps and use low-flow showerheads.
- Heat-pump water heaters use a fraction of the electricity of standard electric tanks.
